STATEMENT 

Art has always been a tool to express our interactions with and our wonderment of the natural world. Never a direct reproduction of what we see in front of us, a piece of art always carries with it our stories and our connections. Birds, flowers and animals all talk to me of our shared experiences; connection and isolation, love and loss, permanence and impermanence. I paint to tell a story of beauty of loss and hope.

With marks and drips, with paint and pencil, and through a series of small decisions and struggles a painting is made. That exquisite and fleeting moment of creation, that bit of magic, that when done right a painting captures.

I like the idea of birds.  Not so much the idea of flight and freedom, but rather the idea that with great beauty comes great fragility.  It's a compelling connection to the human condition.  And for me birds are the ideal vehicle for mark making.  The synthesis of idea and hand are what gives painting its soul.

BIO

Michael Dickter has painted in the Northwest since the 1980's. He studied at the Art Students League in New York, and SUNY Cortland. He shows in galleries nationally and in Washington State. In 2017 he was featured in the Woodson Art Museums 42nd Annual “Birds in Art “ exhibition. His painting was bought by the Woodson for their permanent collection. He was also featured in Fine Art Connoisseurs article ‘Today’s Masters -Avian Art Take Flight’.
